For me it has always stood for freedom and opportunity for all borne out of sacrifice.

This is my country
She is not perfect
In fact she has many flaws
But what she wanted all along
Was freedom and liberty for all
She had a rough start
Made mistakes along the way
Had to make changes
So EVERYone could get a say
She won’t sugar coat it
Some were excluded at first
That has left a lifelong scars
And it will take years to overcome the hurt
she knows the scar always remains
She hopes it keeps her from that mistake again
She wants to make her mission reality
That liberty and opportunity
Is for all in this land
And while we are given voices
And freedom to take stands
And promote or cause
And defend what’s right
She wants us all to know
We have to find that thing
That is worth the fight
That one thing that can unite
She is aching and bleeding
From the division and wars
When what she wants the most
Is together let us be kind
And in kindness show love to others

Long game

Penned January 8, 2021

Tired and weary
Of all the division
Derision, overinflated opinions
This world is aching
My heart is breaking
Why do we keep taking
When we need to be giving
Forgiving
Living for the Light
Darkness stirs the pot
Sits back and watches
Smiling and tapping his fingers together
Cause right now he is winning
What he doesn’t know this fight is not just beginning
Been going on since the dawn of time
The Maker’s got his own divine plan
Love has been drowning out hate since time began
Hate screams louder
Love is more subtle
But after all the drama boils down to a bubble
Love endures
Secures
Ensures
Just when Darkness closes in
One spark from Hope
Reveals LOVE wins
Again and again and again

Tidal Wave

Penned September 2017 reflecting on Hurricane Harvey

Seems like weeks,

what has been days

So elated to feel the sun rays

Weathered the storm

Anchored in hope

Feeling overcome

Tired and weary souls

The might of the wind and rain

Leaves refuse and rubble

Our safe places devastated

Evidence of all our troubles

Oh, but it is not over yet…

Brace yourself for the final wave

Like nothing you have seen

It’s rising up today

See this tidal wave-

Friends and strangers

Family and neighbors

Going into the storm

Rescues and
helping hands

lined up in rows

Work to do, love to give

Feeding hungry

Tearing down walls

In this aftermath

The storm has raged

But love has conquered all

It is rising up and spilling over

This tidal wave of love

Love is our anthem

Love is our hope

It is how we carry on

Destruction left its mark

But Love has overcome
